Curb Space and the Permit Most Oakland Moves Need

Oakland does not issue anything called a moving permit. The city requires an obstruction permit before you block street parking, a curb, a sidewalk, or a traffic lane, which covers almost every move that is not loading entirely from a private driveway. You must post temporary no-parking signs at least 72 hours before the reservation begins, so an application left to the final week leaves no room for processing.
Curb space runs tightest downtown, in Uptown, around Lake Merritt, in Temescal, and near Jack London Square. Without a reserved space, the truck parks wherever it fits, and the difference comes back as carry distance, which is to say, as hours.

The Hills and the Flatlands Are Two Different Moves

Montclair sits on steep hills with winding roads and a compact village at its center, and Upper Rockridge runs to narrow curving streets between the Claremont golf course and the Highway 24 junction. Driveways are short, turnarounds are rare, and plenty of homes are reached by a flight of exterior steps before the front door appears. Hillside lots can be steep enough that a deck is the only usable outdoor space, which removes the staging area a flat yard would otherwise give a crew.
Down in the flatlands the problem inverts. Temescal and Rockridge are dense with Craftsman bungalows and Victorians on tree-lined streets, so the house is easy to reach, and the curb is not. A move in Adams Point is usually a parking problem. A move in Piedmont Pines is usually an access problem. Saying which one you have changes how the day gets planned.

What Drives the Cost of a Move in Oakland

An Oakland quote comes down to how much work separates your belongings from the truck. These are the factors that move the number up or down, so have them ready when you ask for one.
